Gov. Dave Heineman acknowledges problems with the new state emergency radio system, yet downplays their significance.
The Nebraska state troopers union has filed a formal complaint against the $17 million state emergency radio system, claiming it has failed at times, placing officers? lives at risk.
Heineman suggests more training on the system is needed and that local governments must drop their opposition to joining the statewide system.
?But it is now time for local units of government to sign up for this coordinated communications statewide system,? Heineman answers when asked to comment on the grievance.
The Omaha World-Herald reports the State Troopers Association of Nebraska named a number of incidents in which officers? lives were placed in danger due to failures of the system. According to the association, radio problems created problems during the February 13th shootout with two murder suspects who had fled Kansas into southeastern Nebraska. Radio communications increased the danger in a 14-hour standoff in Alliance last summer, according to the association.
